Sydney developer Bill Gertos fined after illegally demolishing heritage building
ABC’s Janelle Wells reports on the New South Wales Land Environment Court’s decision to impose fines worth a quarter of a million dollars for the illegal demolition of a heritage building in Sydney. The court concluded that a property developer who illegally demolished a heritage Edwardian building in Annandale deserves a severe sentence because his actions were premeditated and deliberately flouted a council order to preserve the building’s façade.
Leichhardt Council approved a redevelopment of the building on the condition its facade was preserved. But Gertos and his development company Geitonia disregarded the order and demolished the heritage row of shopfronts.
