Villa in the Classic Style
This home had once been two town houses and was consolidated into one to create a long, open-plan interior and generous terrace. It was north facing and light filled. The brief was to define the spaces, focusing on a large family kitchen with new laundry and pantry rooms; consolidate its personality, as well as bring functionality to the terrace and its approach.
Because of the open layout, the interior needed to be cohesive throughout. The house had existing classic style joinery that was required to be retained and this gave direction for the traditional kitchen. Retaining the all-white walls, the palette remained soft by grouping creams and soft greys with a textured granite bench-top that complimented the existing limestone tile floor. By designing large sliding glazed panel doors we were able to bring light into the new laundry and pantry. The fluted glass referenced the fluted tile that we chose for the kitchen walls.
A more formal entrance needed to be defined. This required a re-stage of the ceiling trays and, again, we considered the existing joinery. Playing with the fluting theme we were able to bring the older joinery into the design and wrap it around to meet the kitchen.
The addition of French Provincial antiques complimented the client’s existing furniture and the traditional panelling as well as adding textural interest. Large sofas and a bespoke coffee table hug a simple fireplace that uses the same stone as the kitchen. A less formal area was formed around the existing bookcases. All spaces connected with the white and blue/grey palette and linen textures.
For the terrace we created discrete area for entertainment. These were defined with the placement of large potted plants and included a dining space with generous dining table off the kitchen area, low deep seating under cover that segued from the interior living room, and a less formal banquette seating area beyond the awnings. The stone chosen for the terrace incorporated the pale cream/grey palette. With a screening wall of olives and climbing plants, the overall result aimed to be one of Mediterranean ease complimenting the classic style of the house.
