New Brutalism on Croatian Coast
Our second project with this fabulous couple. Croatia proved the perfect backdrop for a Brutalist inspired home to emerge out of the rugged coast. We were engaged to work alongside the client as they developed the design with their Croatian architect, creating a comprehensive look throughout.
The aim was to highlight the location, its natural vegetation, its local stone terraces and rugged coast by settling the concrete box of the house deeply into its setting. We achieved this by creating an approach of terraced grounds using local stone crazy paving, maintaining the loose rustication of the area; leaving external vertical rock-faces exposed where possible and floating the terrace over the rugged coastal rocks.
Inside, we aimed to create tension between the texture of the concrete and the crispness of details such as porcelain flooring and black window frames, the sharpness of the finely detailed lighting and the warmth of the walnut timber panelling. Huge glazed panels bring the sea and coast into the house.
Upstairs, timber floors soften the effect for bedrooms and study.
Striated travertine and walnut panels were placed vertically. The mismatched grains of the three tiers are a feature throughout bathrooms and bedrooms and even into the kitchen. The timber and travertine panels provide a glamorous backdrop but maintain the theme of the natural location brought indoors.
