1920s Quarrymaster’s Cottage

Built in the early 20th Century, this stone cottage is of historical interest as the local stone quarry manager’s house.

We were invited in to give the home some cohesion throughout and to re-establish lost heritage details. The restoration of the leadlight and the front door, the replacement of side entrance leadlight, a more authentic wrought iron fence and other details allow the street frontage to feel authentic again. The interior’s brief was to bring some life to the simple rear addition. The young family love their beach suburb and that relaxed way of life was to shine through all our selections of paint, furniture and carpets and artwork styling.

“A few years ago we reached out to a friend to ask for a recommendation of someone who could help us with interior design solutions for our home, a 1920’s sandstone cottage, once owned by the local quarry master.  Our friend recommended Susanna and Mandie from Modern Heritage Matters.  We met Susanna and Mandie and straight away we felt comfortable and excited about our design journey.

We wanted to work on our project over a period of a few years, focusing on specific areas of the house.  Over this time Susanna and Mandie helped us with paint colour, curtains and fabric choices, artwork framing and placement, rugs and bedroom design including a magnificent bed headboard.  The ladies also helped us choose many pieces of furniture for our home, including lounges, side tables, a dining table and chairs and helped with the placement of these pieces.  Throughout the design process, Susanna and Mandie would offer multiple options of interesting and sustainable furniture stores in NSW and interstate, fabric styles, design choices and cost options and they also had a list of great contacts – trades people, artisans and bespoke specialists.  They listened carefully to our brief and respected our style, but also offered us some ideas that were outside of our comfort zone, and we love the finished results!

We then moved on to some outside areas of the house where Susanna and Mandie helped us with a new front door, some stunning leadlight windows, outdoor fencing, a letter box and new garage door.  Everything was well thought through and complimentary for the period of our home.  Throughout the entire process the ladies were engaged, experienced, tasteful, talented, offered great ideas, had interesting opinions and always had a keen eye for what would work in our home to make it more beautiful.  Their fees were extremely reasonable, and it was always a joy to see them, have a laugh and a chat and discuss the next exciting project for our home.

We would highly recommend Susanna and Mandie from Modern Heritage Matters, and we will certainly reach out to them in the future with any home projects that may arise.”
